Wroot Travis Charity C of E Primary School Curriculum
Curriculum Intent
Here at Wroot Travis Charity Primary School our curriculum is based on what we know is best for our pupils.
All pupils are afforded the opportunity to grow and succeed, through our enriched curriculum. This is underpinned by our core Christian values of:
Love, Hope, Trust, Wisdom, Perseverance
Commitment to our pupils is fulfilled through our high aspiration, passion and drive and is founded upon 4 key principles:
1. To unlock children's true potential.
We aim to develop confident, resilient, inquisitive, independent & knowledgeable children through the delivery of a coherent & structured enquiry based curriculum which builds on prior learning. Individuals are challenged to reach their true potential and be ready for the next stage in their education.
2. For children to flourish as unique, well-rounded individuals.
We aim to foster happy and healthy children, within a safe environment, who are given the help they need to learn, grow and achieve as much as they possibly can in an atmosphere which nourishes a healthy mind and body.
3. For children to develop their skills as life-long learners
We aim to provide a broad, balanced curriculum with a wide variety of experiences which nurture the talents of our children enbling them to become creative, enquiring learners and effective communicators who aspire for excellence.
4. For children to widen their horizons and develop as responsible local and global citizens.
We aim to help our children to appreciate their role as part of our community. To ask questions, make informed choices and to take responsibility for the decisions they make. As a result fostering an awareness of the difference they can make as local & global citizens.

How we teach the curriculum at Wroot Travis
Based on the nature of our school and the needs of our pupils we have created a two-year and four-year rolling programme (cycle) of half-termly topics which consist of overarching themes. These topics are based on one of 3 Key Drivers (History, Geography or Science). This approach to the delivery of our curriculum ensures we cover the relevant content despite the children being taught in mixed year group classes. We also ensure our plans focus on the relevant National Curriculum age related expectations; build upon prior learning and are well sequenced in order to maxmise depth of learning.

In Key stage 1 and 2 each unit of work is enquiry based which is created to enthuse the children and to provide a meaningful context for their learning. There is also a planned WOW event which provides first-hand experiences and an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the theme. As pupils progress along their learning journey they will focus on quality key texts which will help to further develop Readiing skills and fully immerse them in their learning.

THE EYFS AND NATIONAL CURRICULUM
EYFS Curriculum
Early Years settings across England follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Statutory Framework, updated in September 2021. All Early Years settings (including schools) are required to follow the guidance in this government document. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland follow different guidance. Working hand in hand with the EYFS Framework is the updated Development Matters document, designed to be used to plan our Early Years curriculum.
There are 4 characteristics of effective learning that are used to underpin our curriculum detailed in Development Matters. The EYFS curriculum is assessed at the end of reception at the age of 5, using the Early Learning Goals (ELG) guidance.
The EYFS Statutory Framework sets out the 7 areas of learning that our curriculum should cover. It gives detailed objectives to teach across the Early Years.
It is important to note that the our effective curriculum is tailored to meet the needs of the children. Plans are purposefully adapted in line with the curriculum intent (what we aim the children to know by the end of their journey with us.) The EYFS curriculum is play-based, with plenty of opportunities for the children to engage with activities and experiences to develop across each area of learning.
More information can be found on our Early Year Page
The National Curriculum
The National Curriculum is a set of subjects and standards used by primary and secondary schools so children learn the same things. It covers what subjects are taught and the standards children should reach in each subject through programmes of study and attainment targets. The National Curriculum is organised into blocks of years called ‘key stages’ (KS). At the end of each key stage, the teacher will formally assess your child’s performance against the prescribed attainment targets.
The National Curriculum covers:
The Core Subjects of: English, Maths, Science.
And the Foundation Subjects: Design and Technology, History, Geography, Art and Design, Music, Physical Education (PE), Computing and Modern Foreign Languages - (French in our school Y3-6).
We also teach: Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Religious Eduction .
More information about the National Curriculum, the programmes of study and attainment targets can be found on the DFE website.
Assessments
Assessment forms an essental element of the teaching and learning process. Teachers assess on a daily basis looking how pupils are performing against lesson objectives to ensure support and challenge can be put in place to move learning forward. More formal testing may take place at the end of a unit of work to assess a pupils performance in certain areas. Pupils also undergo statutory testing at different points throughout their Primary Education to assess their work against national Age Related Expectations.
Year 1 phonics screening check
The Phonics check will take place in June when your child will read 40 decodable words out loud to a teacher. You’ll find out how your child achieved, and their teacher will assess whether he or she needs extra help. If your child doesn’t achieve the pass mark the test will be adminstered again in Year 2.
Key Stage 1
Key Stage 1 assesments cover: Reading, Writing, Maths and Science
The results of these assessments are used alongisde Teacher Judgements of pupils' attainment.
Key Stage 2
Key Stage 2 tests cover: English Reading, English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling, Maths. Writing and Science are also assessed through Teacher Assessment.
The tests are taken in mid-May.
